FINISH THE ASSIGNMENT

Concentrating without Deja’s help is hard. I keep picking up my phone to play a game or to check my messages. My outline is hard to read, so I skip some of it.

By the time I finish typing, I end up with only six pages. Double-spaced! And there are wavy lines everywhere. Picking up my phone, I text Deja.

Dominic and Deja Text Capture

That’s when it hits me: the computer can do it for me!

I load the entire paper into Scriberoo. The AI adds the missing pages, formats my essay and lists all my citations. Best of all: no squiggles!

A few weeks later, I’m in a meeting with the principal, my parents and my English teacher.

“That is my writing. I just used a program to fix my mistakes.” And insert a few pages, I add silently. I open my laptop and show everyone the essay I drafted.

“Dominic, school policy explicitly states that any essay composed with the assistance of AI will receive an automatic zero,” the principal says.

“Why didn’t we know this ahead of time? My son feels like he’s being targeted,” my dad says.

“Mr. Payne, you signed this form stating that you received and read a copy of our policies.”

One year later:  So yeah, I’m repeating the class my senior year. Fortunately, Ms. Sabin has a student teacher who doesn’t hate me. And I still have my research paper from last year. I could just turn that in.

What should he do . . .

Should he resubmit
the same AI generated to a student teacher
the following year?
